This Is A Question Just About Every Blogger Has Asked. So, How DO People Find Your Blog?
Most of us who start blogging online initially just want to put our knowledge and opinions down on our blog site, and don’t think too much about people finding us. We just want to write for ourselves, and for our friends and relatives. In fact, some blogs restrict access to only family and friends. There’s nothing wrong with that. A lot of bloggers just want to reach those they know. After a while, though, you might ask yourself, “How do people make money blogging?”
When you want to make money blogging, you want to reach a larger audience. It’s common for those trying to bring people to their blog, whether for outside opinions or maybe to sell products, to know how to write posts but not how to attract visitors. There are a number of ways to bring visitors to your blog, if you know how to do it.
You can ask your followers on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, Pinterest, etc to follow your blog. That way you can get traffic even if the main search engines don’t rank your site, or put it on page 25 out of 63. These social media sites have rules, but as long as you follow them your will be fine. The key here is to be active on the social media sites of your choice, build a following, and post that you have a blog you want them to visit. Over time you can build a group of followers to your blog and your traffic will build as some of those followers pass on your site information to their followers.
Be proactive and don’t be afraid to promote yourself and your blog. It’s best, at least in the beginning, to choose only two or three social media platforms to use. Too many will take too much of your time and dilute your efforts.
Search Engine Optimization (SEO)
Here is where most of us get lost. We have an idea that somehow search engines such as Google, Yahoo, and Bing rank websites and bring the ones that they think are most related to what the person searching the web is looking for to the top of the first page, but how they do it and how we can get our sites ranked at the top escapes us. We’re clueless. The good thing is that it’s not rocket science. It can be hit-and-miss, but there are proven methods for optimizing your website and your posts with the search engines to improve your rankings.
As long as you learn what to do to you can get your website ranked and begin to attract visitors to your blog, and your traffic can grow.
Here’s the quick and dirty rundown on what you will need to do to get your website ranked high enough to attract visitors:
- Write good, quality, engaging content. This is a must whether your goal is just to write for family and friends, use social media, or try to get ranked with search engines. If you don’t write what people want to read, you won’t last on the internet. It’s just a fact. When you write a post, put some of your best effort and creativity into it. Make it something people want to read.
- Write a LOT of good content. If you only post occasionally, people who like to visit your blog will be disappointed when they click on your site and you haven’t written anything new from the last time they visited. You need to keep giving them something good to read. I know that this can challenge your creativity, and you can get writer’s block. I know I do. But hang in there and write. There are tons of things to blog about.
- Use keywords. Ok, this section might be a little long, but bear with me, because it’s important. Do you know what keywords are? They are just the words that someone online types into the search box when they are looking for something. The search engines look through the millions of blogs online and match the keywords with content that they find on websites and bring those websites forward in a ranked list. If the search keywords match words you have in a blog post then your post will be ranked somewhere on that list. Where on that list your site is depends on a variety of factors that the search engines are designed to look for. So, you ask, how do I know what keywords to use for a subject I am going to write a post on? You need to do keyword research, using an app that will help you do it, like Jaaxy. Jaaxy is a keyword search tool provided by a website called Wealthy Affiliate. This site is dedicated to helping people become successful online, whether to make money or just become a subject matter expert in their niche. Joining Wealthy Affiliate is FREE, and your initial training is free. You will be trained on how to find keywords that will bring traffic to your blog and you will have a community of like-minded people to answer your questions and help you learn. If you decide that the things you are learning are worthwhile, you can upgrade and take advantage of a wealth of training and tips to be successful in reaching your goals. I have to be upfront and tell you that there is a lot to know to be successful online. That’s why there are so many failed websites. People build a site and then don’t know what to do to get visitors.
- Join Wealthy Affiliate. In my opinion there isn’t a better place to learn the ins and outs of becoming successful online than Wealthy Affiliate, and I’ve looked at a few. As I said before, it’s free to join, no credit card needed. The nice thing about that is the you can look things over and decide if it’s for you or not. Another good thing that Wealthy Affiliate does is give you your first week at the Premium level, to show you what is available at that higher level of access. The Starter level is free, the Premium level costs $49 per month. Your first month is $19, again to give you time to learn and grow into your web endeavor. Training is comprehensive, from using social media to SEO and beyond.
Disclosure: The FTC requires blogger to advise readers that if they (readers) click on an affiliate link and end up purchasing a product, the blogger will earn a commission. To me, that’s the proper order of things.
I found a good You Tube video by Tyson Zahner about getting more traffic to your website. He offers some bonuses that I think are expired, but the info is pretty good.
Quick note: Tyson talks about a course called “The Three Minute Expert” in his video. I did some checking, and that course is over $600, so I don’t recommend it for beginners who are not yet making money on their blogs. It’s not something I can afford yet, myself. It’s probably a great course but it’s out of my reach financially right now.
One more point about Wealthy Affiliate. I wrote a review on the site a few months back. You can find my Wealthy Affiliate review here.
I’m sure that there are other places to go to learn the “secrets” of online success, but I don’t know what they are, because I stopped looking for them once I found WA. I joined, and in about 3 days I saw the value of upgrading to Premium. Within the first month I took the yearly discount and signed up for a year. My goals are to have a long term business online and I have found the way to do it with Wealthy Affiliate.
