Marketing Has Come A Long Way, Baby!

When we think about the evolution of marketing, don’t you agree that our perspective depends on our life experience? Younger marketers may start their experience in the current social media and mobile device era, while those of us who are older may remember door-to door sales calls and written orders.

Wherever your starting point is, marketing is evolving, and has been since the first cave man traded his wife’s necklace for a crude hammer (you’ve probably seen the Forge Of Empires commercial).

Here’s a hint: Four times as many customers would rather watch a video about a product than read about it.

Think about that for a minute.

Four times! Video marketing is the future, and the future is now!

If you’re not taking advantage of video in your business marketing efforts, you’re behind the power curve.

Suppose you’re sitting in a waiting room somewhere reading a magazine. You’re pretty much stuck with photo ads with written copy. If you’re at home shopping online, which do you prefer?

Again, I think a person’s age is one of the factors determining what that person prefers. Younger consumers are comfortable with and would enjoy watching a 30-second ad rather than read a sales paragraph with a photo.

Here’s an example. My 14 year-old granddaughter is an artist. I had a book, amply illustrated, on how to bring out your “inner artist.” Actually it was more like a 3-ring binder, done by a professional artist. I tried to give the book to her, and she wasn’t interested.

“I can just google whatever I want to know,” she told me.
I’m a blogger. Back when blogging got started, it was just the written word. Now a good blog post contains not only text, but photos and videos as well. If you have an online business whether it be a blog or some other form of marketing, video will probably be in your future.

Many online marketer have a You Tube channel that they post their videos on.

Take a minute and watch the embedded video. It’s about 10 minutes long and explains 4 different types of video that you can use for your marketing.

If you blog, you will probably mostly use the 4th type of video listed above. It’s basically an informational video where someone (you or a designated spokesperson) talks about the subject matter of the video.

As a blogger, I haven’t started making my own videos as yet. I’m from the older generation, so its going to take me a little time to get accustomed to it. So far, I’ve made one screen cast video but I haven’t published it anywhere so far.

I see the importance of video for the future though, and am beginning to involve myself with it. My hope is to get comfortable with the medium.

This is another indicator of the trend toward video.

My teenage grandsons will sit on my couch after school while they are waiting for their mother to get off work and what do they do?

They watch TV.

Not just TV, they watch You Tube. There is a lot of crazy stuff on You Tube, and the crazier the better for them. There are people who have attracted a huge following on You Tube by making videos of themselves doing crazy, stupid things.

Kids actually like that stuff.

Desktop VS Mobile

If you’re wondering whether most video is watched on the venerable old desktop or on a mobile device like a tablet or a smart phone, mobile devices are winning the battle. With all video platforms included, such as Netflix, You Tube, Dailymotion, etc., almost 60% (59.9%) is viewed from a mobile device.
