There’s A Difference In Living And Living Well

The title of this post if from a popular country western song by George Strait. The song is about the difference between living a lonely life by yourself and living a better life with someone you love. it’s a great song, even if you aren’t a fan of country music (which I am). It’s a great message too.

In my post I’d like to look at those words from the title of the song from a different perspective. I’d like to look at the difference in living and living well financially.

How Much Money You Have Can Make A Big Difference In Your Quality Of Life

I notice people as I go about my daily life. It’s kind of a hobby of sorts. I feel like I can guess the difference in the financial opportunities that people have by observing what they wear, where they shop, what they drive, and things like that. Everybody that isn’t dead is living, but everybody isn’t enjoying the same quality of life.

There's a difference in living and living well

Take the person begging on the street corner, for example. Now I know, having worked for a police department, that some of those people with the cardboard signs are just struggling to survive, and some are professional beggars. I learned that some of the professionals make as much as $30,000 per year by looking forlorn and holding up a cardboard sign. That was startling to me.

Professional beggars aside, if I was reduced to begging for enough money to get a meal, I’d be looking for a way out of that lifestyle. What a desperate way to have to live!

Then there are those trying to live life and maybe support a family on a minimum wage job. I can see why people in that position are agitating for an increase in the minimum wage, because it’s HARD for a family to get by on such an income.

Even if the magical $15/hr minimum wage becomes law, as it has in a couple of places, that’s only $600 per week before taking out any taxes or other deductions. That’s only $31,200 per year, again before deductions. I don’t think that’s much of a take home pay. A single person can survive easily enough on that much, but it’s still a struggle for a family. Housing, transportation, food, utilities, and such aren’t cheap.

We aren’t supposed to live on minimum wage for long. It’s supposed to be an entry level wage for those just starting out in the work force. We’re supposed to get raises as we gain experience and work our way up financially.

The next step up are those who are making a good income. I’m talking about people earning upwards of $50,000 per year. Life’s a lot more comfortable for these people, if they are being wise and not drowning in debt. If you are drowning in debt, by the way, you can get out by applying the Debt Snowball method and put your lifestyle back on track. It’s the best way to quickly pay off debt without consolidating.

I haven’t consistently earned overt $100,000 per year, but there have been a couple of years when my wife and I have surpassed that amount with our combined incomes. It’s fun to make that much, even if it’s only for a few years. Of course, we weren’t smart and didn’t save much of it.

Throughout Life, Our Income Goes Up, And Up, And Up, Then Drops Back Down When We Retire.

Now, lets discuss retirement for a bit. What kind of retirement do you think someone making minimum wage can look forward to? Social Security isn’t going to pay much. I know because I’m getting it. I’m also getting retirement income from my Navy service, but with both combined I’m only getting a little over half of what I earned in my best years. Minimum wage jobs are for those just starting out, and retirees.

Schools Should Be Teaching Students How To Succeed In Life

Academics are good, but if you graduate from high school without knowing how to work and earn a living, you’re behind the power curve in life. College or university can be worse. Many of us get to add a huge debt to our lives and graduate with a degree that won’t earn us a dime.

Schools should prepare us to go out and make a living, and to a large degree they don’t. I know some of it is our own fault. Some of us aren’t looking at what we what to do after school, or how much we want to make. Maybe our rosy picture of our careers aren’t reality.

Whatever the reason, too many people get out of school and get stuck living, and not living well.

Do You Want To Live Well Financially?

I know I do, and I’m actively working toward that goal. Both my wife and I are retired now, living on a fixed income as they say, and a reduced income at that. Our savings are slowly dwindling, and it’s concerning.

I can go back to work, for low pay or maybe even minimum wage which is lower pay to make ends meet, but do we really want to retire from one job so we can go to work at a lower paying job to pay the bills?

Think about that for a minute. Haven’t you seen the gray-haired person behind the counter or at the drive through at a fast food restaurant taking your order? I have, many times.

Would you consider that living well?

Living well financially is, to me, living without worrying about money because you have all you need, or even all you want.

If you don’t have that now, do you think you will have it when you retire? If you don’t have it, is there a way that you can get it?
