Why Do People Self Sabotage?

Are you like me?  Do you start out with a new project, perhaps a self-improvement project or a new business idea, only to find that as you go along you begin to sabotage yourself?  Do you shoot yourself in the foot just when things begin to roll the way you want them to?  I did.  I used to be notorious for it.  Why does it happen, and what can we do about it?

Maybe it was a character flaw.  Maybe I was afraid of success.  Maybe I was uncertain about the added responsibility or workload associated with success.  (You can add your own “maybe’s” here).

According to Psychology Today, “self sabotaging behavior results from a misguided attempt to rescue ourselves from our own negative feelings.”

Take comfort eating, for example.  I’ll raise my hand to that one.  That’s a common form of self sabotage, as are drug/alcohol abuse.  The king of all the self sabotaging behaviors, though, is PROCRASTINATION.

Psychology Today again tells us why procrastination is the king.  They say it’s, “because procrastination is the gap between intention and action, and it is in this gap that the self operates.  The undermining behavior is in not closing the gap.”

When we want to make a decision or take an action, it’s easy to make excuses and delay, delay, delay.  It’s easy, but it’s also self destructive.

If you’re a procrastinator, what’s the solution?

The simplest solution is to just get started.  (Also from Psychology Today)  Get in the HABIT of getting started.  I read an article once that said that it takes about 2 weeks practicing something for it to become a habit, and the beginning of a skill.  When you feel that urge to delay, DO something instead.  In a couple of weeks you will have overcome your desire to delay.

So I tried it.  I took action, and I stopped the delay, delay, delay.  It worked!  Ir’s just a matter of making up your mind and taking control of your life.  Change your habits and you change your life.

That’s why I use the past tense in my opening paragraph – why I say “I did” instead of “I do.”

The rest of this article is not about self sabotage.  It’s about starting your own business.

This article is about you starting your own business.  So, ARE you ready to start your own business?  Then let’s get started!  I’m talking (writing, really) about an online business.  My son has just started his own business, a construction business.  He’s not online much.  He’s out working with his hands.  This information isn’t for him.

It’s for YOU!

There are three things you need to run a successful online business.

  1. A website
  2. A business idea or niche
  3. Training on how to be successful online

How about if I give you all Three for FREE?

If you’re really ready to go for it with that idea that you’ve been toying with for a while now, I’m going to show you where you can get your own website for FREE, and where you can get your initial training for FREE too!  Sound interesting?

Even if you don’t have an idea yet, the Starter level training will show you how to come up with one.

You can have your free, professional website up and running within about two minutes, built for you.  The host is called Site Rubix, and you can have 2 free websites on their domain.  The training is from Wealthy Affiliate, and is unique and unrivaled in all the world wide web.  It’s FREE too.  The Starter level of training is free.  There is a paid level, called Premium, for $49/month.  But that’s for later, if you want to take advantage of it.

You will not find better training on starting and running an online business anywhere!

With the Starter level, which is specifically designed for getting started, you will get Level 1 Certification training, and Level 1 Affiliate Bootcamp training to go with your free websites.  You will also get Premium level services for the first 7 days.  That includes help from business professionals who started the same way you are, plus 1-on-1 coaching, expert advice, and a whole lot more.  Why? so you can see what is available should you decide you want to upgrade.  So you can make an informed choice.

Don’t worry, there’s no pressure to upgrade, and there are no deadlines in your training. It’s self-paced, and you can absorb the training at your own rate and schedule.  You can stay at the free Starter level indefinitely, if you want.

What better way to find out if an online business is really what you want than trying it for FREE?  Leave the credit card in  your wallet.  You don’t need it.  You can be up and running, and learning your way, as soon as you click on the following banner.  If you want, you can read my review of Wealthy Affiliate HERE.

Well, did you do it?

If you did, then you’re probably not reading this.  If you are reading this, and didn’t do it, why not?  Is there something holding you back?

  • I don’t have the time
  • I already have a job
  • I have a family to take care of
  • I’m not smart enough to run a business

Those are all excuses.  They are all justifications for PROCRASTINATION!  Aren’t they?

What I’m offering you is a FREE opportunity to have your own business.  To get a website up and running and see if it’s what you really want.  What’s holding you back?

Let me just say one more thing.  This is not a get rich quick scheme.  Like any business, starting an online business takes effort and time.  To be successful, most businesses require time.  They have to be built.  Some, like franchises, require money too.  Here you have an opportunity to start for free.  You get to work from the comfort of your own home. You decide your hours.  You only have to answer to yourself, not a boss.  You’re the boss.

Great post which I can relate to. I am a glass half empty guy instead of half full, also you are spot on when you say delay, delay, delay. This is me again I delay before making a decision to give it a go.
The way you link it into a positive of WA, is very good. As you explain, no excuses give it a try, once you get started there i s no looking back.
Personally an article that has me written all over it, this post will go down really well with a lot of visitors.

Hey Grant!

I’ve been there! Procrastinating is the worst…

You feel like you’re going nowhere and you’re just stuck in a life you don’t like.

Taking action is the best thing you can do to change this, I totally agree with you on that. I also chose Wealthy Affiliate a couple months ago and it’s been awesome!

Thanks for the motivation! 😉

I have been known to have a problem with procrastination when it comes to starting something new that is good for me, but takes work. Could be a new exercise program, or something that will help me to increase my income. I’ve tried them both before.

Sometimes I run into another problem though. When I’ve been going at it for a while and I just seem to run out of gas and stop the new behavior all together. Have you experienced anything similar to that? Do you know a good way to continue through instead of stopping?

Thanks for the comment, Nick.  Yeah, i’ve petered out on projects myself.  I think the best way to keep yourself going is to set goals.  Daily, or weekly, even monthly although I think that’s getting a little far out.  The nearer goals keep you more focused.  Write them down and at the end of the goal period write down your success or failure.
